November 3, 2017 Duncan Hunter

On a chilly day on the 1st of November, 76 Women and 124 Men gathered from a collection of universities to race in the second installment of the LUCA Cross-Country League at Mitcham Common. The weather was dry, with the course hard in places following good weather over the previous week, with it being fairly warm for this time of year. The race started with runners watching out for pot holes, and while serious injury is always unwanted, for the first time first aid cover was provided in the unlikely […]

African athletics on the rise

November 2, 2017 Daniel Woodburn

Take a look at athletics on the world stage ever since it has been gripped by professionalism, and you will notice a number of trends. Arguably the two most persistent are the U.S and Jamaica vying for top-dog status in the sprinting discipline, and Kenyans and Ethiopians looking to get one over each-other in the 5k, 10k and marathon. Despite this last example, attributed to the two east-African countries being exceptionally mountainous, one might be surprised at the relative lack of African success in other disciplines. Though it may […]

Outrun the black dog

October 20, 2017 James Findon

The ‘Black Dog’ has long been used as a metaphor for depression and other forms of mental ill-health. Over a quarter of students at UK universities are living with a Black Dog of their own. However, as many as half will never disclose this to their university and thus may miss out on vital support resources. To shine a light on these issues and to promote the benefits of running for mental wellbeing, King’s Athletics are hosting a one-off 5K run called Outrun the Black Dog.  King’s Athletics hope to champion […]

There were a fantastic 259 runners participating, with 146 men and 113 women. This led to a total of 58 teams, 29 in […]

Flying High on the Pole Vault

October 16, 2017 James Findon

By Agustina Singh & Alex Yeo (LSE) Pole vaulting is not a sport for the faint-hearted. Besides requiring a certain amount of courage to charge down the runway holding a really long piece of fibre glass, pole vaulters have to combine the speed of a sprinter, power of a jumper, and the grace of a gymnast, in order to make a successful jump. Last Sunday, athletes made their way to the world-class Lee Valley Athletics Centre for the very first LUCA pole vault training session. This is part of a 6-session […]

LUCA is proud to announce a new pole vault training group for London students. Novice and experienced vaulters will have the opportunity to train with a qualified coach at Lee Valley Indoor Athletics Track every Sunday, leading up to the LUCA Indoor Championships in November.
