In September last year, I discovered that the IAAF World Athletics were taking place in London in 2017. After hearing great things about the volunteering experience at the 2012 Olympics, I was keen to apply to be a ‘Runner’ (the name given to all the volunteers).
There was a nervous but hopeful atmosphere in the red starting area an hour before the London Marathon was to commence. It was akin to a music festival with big screens, portaloos and a sea of excited individuals in shorts. We were funnelled into the start zone and it was only when we were crammed into the pens that the scale of the race dawned on me. Last Sunday, 121 students came down to run 5 or 10 kilometers around the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. The sun was out for the day, which made the race an ideal way to spend a Sunday morning. This was the first ever edition of the London Students’ Run and what a success it was. England Athletics supported the event which was sponsored by Cafe Football. King’s College London organised the third LUCA LCL cross-country race, which took place on Wednesday 16th of November 2016. Around two hundred students ran the Wimbledon Common XC course, which also incorporated the University of London (UL) and University Hospitals (UH) Championships. The female racers completed a ~5km hilly and muddy lap, while the male competitors ran two laps. With both female and male teams crowned UL Champs, UCL displayed very solid performances.
