Heroes of the Hill: XC Begins

The new season of the LUCA Cross-Country League began in style at Parliament Hill on 23rd October. Clear bright blue skies welcomed 275 runners from across London and the South East for the traditional curtain raiser of the LUCA season. UCL hosted the race which saw athletes race around multiple laps of 2.6km, including a notorious hill right at the start. Another year, another successful LUCA Outdoor Athletics Series. Fresh from their seasons on the country and racing indoors, the London Universities and Colleges descended on the iconic Parliament Hill tartan to begin the proceedings. The main event of the first meet was the lesser-spotted 10,000m Championships, giving athletes a rare opportunity to test themselves over the 10k distance in near ideal circumstances- useful for any athletes wishing to compete at BUCS or other exclusive events. LUCA take on BUCS Cross-Country

On Saturday 2nd February, athletes from across the UK set off from home to the southern city of Exeter to compete in the BUCS Cross-Country race. Despite concerns raised due to the weather and the snowy landscapes observed by many on their way to Devon, the course itself in Bicton College was clear and as athletes started arriving in the morning, the sun came out and set a vibrant atmosphere. Last Saturday, LUCA descended on Lee Valley for what promised to be another fantastic Indoor Championships, with 236 athletes entered across the board. Incorporating both the University of London and United Hospitals Championships within the overall LUCA Champs, the day saw a range of excellent performances throughout, as well as some unexpected results. Classic season opener at Parli Hill as St Mary’s storm into early lead

The traditional curtain raiser for the LUCA cross-country season duly delivered again yesterday at a suitably autumnal Parliament Hill. All the components were there: a lovely dry course, huge turnouts and of course a poor Imperial fresher donning the ‘King of the Hill’ shirt. It was ideal conditions for racing, particularly for a first race, and there were great numbers of runners doing their first ever XC race. Four seasons into the LUCA outdoor series’ existence, King’s are on the verge of regaining the trophy they last won in the inaugural season but have since lost out on to UCL. After KCL took a surprise 61-point lead at Parliament Hill, UCL and Imperial were bound to mount an assault at Lee Valley. Who are the speediest cross-country runners this year in the London student population? This question has been put to rest after the final LUCA London Cross-country League race for the season. Full results are posted here. The race, held at Bushy Park, took place on the 1st March 2017 and enjoyed a good turn-out of athletes from across the LUCA member clubs.
