January 27, 2020 Jack Dickenson

The Hawkshead Hobble will be hosted by the Royal Veterinary College Triathlon Club on 8th March 2020. Review and Preview

January 22, 2020 Jack Dickenson

As the New Year is well and truly underway, it can only mean one thing: an overdue LUCA piece. After a quiet few weeks after indoors we’re straight back into the thick of it, with events coming thick and fast. But first, let’s have a look back at the tail end of last year, mainly because I didn’t write anything at the time, but also to refresh our memories of the LUCA XC League situation.   Wimbledon Common XC The start of autumn term is hectic for XC racers; 3 […]

Mitcham merry-go-round brings fresh twists

November 4, 2019 Jack Dickenson

Mitcham Common played host to the second round of the LUCA XC series last Wednesday, with almost 200 students making the journey south to tackle a deceptively tricky course. Fast ground lay in wait but with some nasty short climbs it would not be the pancake course many would have hoped for after Parli Hill. Thankfully some sun appeared with the runners to give a distinctly autumnal feel to proceedings.  After a hotly contested first race, it was Imperial and St Mary’s who set the early pace and this was […]

It’s XC time

October 5, 2019 Jack Dickenson

Welcome. Choose one of your 78 shiny new freshers pens. Clear the Pot Noodle remnants from your desk. Dig out that diary you bought with all the best organisational intentions but has yet to see the light of day. Get ready to circle some dates. Don’t pencil them in but write in gloriously permanent marker, because that’s right, LUCA IS BACK!! Strap yourself in tight, because it’s going to be a muddy one. If you thought the excitement of freshers week couldn’t be beaten then boy are you in for […]

LUCA set to feature at Night of the 10,000s

July 5, 2019 Jack Dickenson

‘The world’s most exciting track meet‘ is back with a bang this Saturday 6th of July, as thousands are once again expected to descend on Parliament Hill for the 7th edition of the Night of the 10,000 PBs. Having attracted 8,000 spectators, as well as over 50,000 watching online, you could say that the atmosphere might be more Glastonbury than the usual serenity of Hampstead Heath come the last few races.  The remarkable thing is, this isn’t organised by some big events company or a national governing body, but an […]

Hobble Hits the Heights

March 31, 2019 Jack Dickenson

Last Sunday, the RVC put on the third edition of their Hawkshead Hobble 5 and 10k races around their Potters Bar campus. It sounds as though it went incredibly well, so see the following report from race directors Luke Gunter and Eleanor Evans: “The Hawkshead Hobble 2019 was a resounding success, and we are incredibly grateful to everyone that helped our event run smoothly. We would firstly like to say thank you to our amazing sponsors, Orbital Climate Solutions and Health & Vitality Centre Welwyn Garden City. The massage therapy was […]

Scrubs poised for XC showdown

February 26, 2019 Jack Dickenson

With temperatures soaring to a frankly ridiculous 21 degrees in February (still sure about climate change Donald?), and The National over, one could be forgiven for thinking that XC is over for this season. Runners at Wormwood Scrubs tomorrow will find out otherwise, as LUCA runners take to the mud for one last time to decide the series’ victors. It promises to be a tight one, too; with 4 races done, 2 teams have emerged as contenders but with notoriously fluctuating turnouts at the last race, it could all potentially […]

ED Awareness Week – we want your stories!

February 18, 2019 Jack Dickenson

Next Monday sees the start of Eating Disorders Awareness Week. Running from February 25th to March 3rd, it aims to increase awareness of the myriad issues surrounding eating disorders, and promote understanding of both the conditions and the support available for them.  In sport, and in athletics in particular, focus on food is naturally one means of optimising performance by ensuring adequate nutrition. However, the danger of this developing into an eating disorder is recognised, but perhaps under-appreciated amongst the athletics community. This is what James Findon, founder of LUCA […]

The Royal Veterinary College are hosting the 3rd edition of their successful Hawkshead Hobble, a 5 and 10km race around their scenic Potters Bar campus. Welcome back

January 9, 2019 Jack Dickenson

The last of the turkey’s gone, the tree is well and truly down and students everywhere are bemoaning the start of the new term. There is some good news though, as LUCA have some afternoons of joy (read: pain) to brighten the winter months. So, here’s a glimpse of what you can look forward to from us in 2019.   Ally Pally XC AKA when you realise that 8th mince pie might not have been the greatest shout. The shortest course, but also arguably the toughest, with some killer climbs […]
