August 22, 2017 Emma Butcher

Written by Emma Simpson-Dore, UCL graduate, former LUCA Official’s Secretary and UCL Athletics Captain.
In September last year, I discovered that the IAAF World Athletics were taking place in London in 2017. After hearing great things about the volunteering experience at the 2012 Olympics, I was keen to apply to be a ‘Runner’ (the name given to all the volunteers).

Colin McCourt – the comeback kid

May 19, 2017 Emma Butcher

Lucky LUCA got the chance to catch up with Colin McCourt recently, a former St Mary’s student with bundles of running talent and an interesting challenge on his hands this year. 1. For any readers who haven’t heard, can you explain what led to you being challenged to a bet to run a sub-16 minute 5km time by the end of the year (or receive 17 tattoos on your body!)? May 2, 2017 Emma Butcher

The May bank holiday weekend brought much excitement for student athletics in the form of the BUCS outdoor athletics championships. Being LUCA though, we want to give a great big shout-out to the students of […]

Is this the end of athletics?

March 28, 2017 Emma Butcher

With recent news of Usain Bolt, Mo Farah and Jess Ennis-Hill retiring, should be we be concerned for the future of athletics? London 2012 was meant to be the UK’s crowning glory; to inspire people to get into sports and combat the obesity epidemic. At the start it seemed like it was working; the Great Britain team outperformed expectations, the nation fell in love with stars such as Ennis-Hill, and sports participation rates were higher than ever in 2012. But for all that talk about ‘inspiring a generation’, the statistics suggest that sports […]
