Drizzle can’t dampen vet’s race

The Hawkshead Hobble, held at the RVC Hawkshead campus, took place on Sunday 8th April. In total 71 runners started and finished the course. Light drizzle throughout the day and a wet and muddy course made the run even more challenging, but it was thoroughly enjoyed (and endured) by all. The organising team are grateful to all of the RVC staff that supported the race as well as all the RVC student marshals who guided runners around the course and helped tremendously with the post-race clean-up. Tomorrow, Brunel will host the National BUCS Cross Country Championships.  The race takes place at Hillingdon fields. Women will race first at midday with Brunel and Team GB athlete Phillipa Bowden hoping to make the most of the home advantage. The Brunel Psychology student has had a unfaltering start in the LUCA XC league, winning every race. She will face stiff competition from in-form Jess Judd who finished third last year to Rebecca Murray and Emily Hosker-Thornhill, but has since won the National and Inter Counties championships. Bowden and Olley selected for European Cross Country Champs

British Athletics has today announced a full team of 40 athletes selected to represent the country at the European Cross Country Championships in Samorin, Slovakia on Sunday 10 December. The team includes Brunel student Philippa Bowden and Imperial student Chris Olley. Bowden has impressed in her first season in the LUCA Cross-Country league, winning all three races so far. King’s and London City to host innovative relay event

King’s Athletics and London City AC will co-host a new relay competition in London next summer. The competition, called ‘London Relays’, will see athletes compete across a variety of different relay events in a one-day championship on June 10. Although the exact format of the relays have yet to be announced, it is understood the event takes inspiration from Usain Bolt’s Nitro Games and will therefore seek to offer a thrilling programme of different relay events. Imperial College London Athletics have announce the date for Hyde Park Relays. The annual relays, the largest student relays in the UK, will be held on the 3rd March 2018. The event sees over 600 competitors take on a 5K in central London’s Hyde Park. Athletes compete in men’s/mixed teams of six and women’s teams of four. The event is a highlight of the university athletics calendar and attracts student athletes from across Europe. Changes to the Cross-Country League

The LUCA Cross-Country League will trial a new results system this season. Previously known as the London Colleges League (LCL), the LUCA Cross-Country League will trial a ‘parkrun’ style results system in the 2017-18 season. This will require all athletes to register on the LUCA website before racing. Athletes only need to register once throughout their time at university. Upon registering, athletes will receive a unique five-character ID number starting with their initials.
