Alumni Club Launches Mike Baggs Tribute Fund

The London Alumni club, Motspur AC, has launched a tribute fund in memory of the late Mike Baggs.

UCL graduate, Mike Baggs, was Secretary to the London Colleges League (LUCA XC League) for 31 consecutive years between 1980 and 2011. He returned to watch the league final in spring of 2014 and 2015 at Bushy Park.

He passed away in January 2016.

A memorial trophy

Motspur is aiming to raise £500 for the trophy, which will be awarded to the top ranked club at the end of each season. The ranking is based on the performances of the two ‘A’ teams in the cross-country league.

Baggs became league secretary following the conclusion of the 1980 season. At this time the league was arranged in two divisions, the higher of which UCL men had just won. Baggs had skipped the league AGM in order to train. During the meeting his team-mates agreed to award him his team medal on the condition that he accepted becoming secretary.

“Such utter benevolence is often inconspicuous in amateur sport, however seldom has athletics seen an individual as quietly brilliant as Mike Baggs” – Jonny Laybourn

Baggs had previously served as secretary for a single season as a student. He accepted the new invitation but was forced to retire from racing after being hit by a car.

After his retirement, Imperial’s Ming Wang-Koh took over as secretary before passing the role onto UCL’s Jonny Laybourn.
