2016 – What a year.

January 9, 2017 Seth Kennard

Another year done and thus marks the passage of time. Right now the afternoons are dark and damp, the trainers lie forgotten and muddy in the corner. Trainers ruefully awaiting the spring and beyond the spring, the warm summer filled with daylight, perfect running conditions and plenty of races. It’s time to start training hard again and if you’re thinking of starting a gym membership  you’re not alone. Google searches for ‘gym membership’ are doubled in January compared to any other time of the year – partly thanks to people trying […]

Blue skies and smiles for first ever London Students’ Run

December 6, 2016 Louise Pech

Last Sunday, 121 students came down to run 5 or 10 kilometers around the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. The sun was out for the day, which made the race an ideal way to spend a Sunday morning. This was the first ever edition of the London Students’ Run and what a success it was. England Athletics supported the event which was sponsored by Cafe Football. Run Safe

November 25, 2016 Lucy Patchett

Earlier this month, tragedy hit the sports community as two young, aspiring athletes were killed while using a pedestrian crossing during a night time training session with their club in Hampshire. Long-distance runners Stacey Burrows, 16, and Lucy Pygott, 17, had followed the instructions of their club leaders to ensure they used the pedestrian crossing safely, but unfortunately that was not enough. This cautionary tale reminds runners everywhere of the dangers of the road. Runners must be careful as winter approaches and the days become darker earlier. All we can […]

Injury Anxiety: the path to recovery

October 25, 2016 Sophie House

All athletes experience injuries from time to time. But the thought of being injured, and taking time out from our sport, often evokes a hell of a lot of frustration, self-doubt, and anxiety. So, besides the obvious physical pain of injury, we are often left feeling heartbroken and a little bit empty too, torn away from our love affair by shin splints. There are plenty of incredibly useful articles out there about how to recover physically from sports injuries; from stretching to strengthening techniques, or ice and elevated resting. Many of […]

The Mindset of a Runner

October 16, 2016 Rahil Sachak-Patwa

At the elite level, there is a nature versus nurture debate in long distance running. Specifically, the question many people ask is, “why are East African runners so good?” Although many scientists have tried to answer this question, the running community is still unsure on the whole. Geneticists have shown that there are ‘athlete genes’, which predispose some people to be better runners than others, for instance determining how much athletes benefit from training. All thing considered though, we are all genetically very similar. If most people have the ability to […]

London Students’ Run: Two Months To Go!

October 5, 2016 Jay Reynolds

This December, London Universities and Colleges Athletics (LUCA) is hosting the first ever London Students’ 5 & 10K run. Taking place on December 4th, the two fun races will start and finish outside the London Stadium, former host of London 2012 and now home to West Ham United, by the iconic ArcelorMittal Orbit in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. To be outside an arena that has held some of the greatest athletics spectacles ever will certainly be something! You will be running through the Parklands, a route that is part […]

Fun Run? A Guide To Getting Started.

September 4, 2016 admin

My idea for this article came from my brother, a self-professed non-runner. Having recently tackled his first run in 6 years, his question was quite clear – “how long will it take me to be able to run without pain?”. While this is of course difficult to answer exactly because everyone is different, it seems valuable to look at possible answers so that newbies can get their bearings. First of all, running (or any sport for that matter) is challenging, especially when you first start. Yet running for fun doesn’t need […]

Get your colour on with the Colour Run

August 31, 2016 Emma Butcher

Have you ever felt like a 5km run was a bit…well, boring? Well fear no more: Colour Runs are here to brighten your day! Touted as the ‘happiest 5km on the planet’, Colour Runs involve a 5K running route with a vast spectrum of colourful powder along the way (see below for an example colour explosion).
