New kids on the block: St George’s become ratified

St George’s Student Union have ratified a new athletics club, three years after the previous club dissolved.

The new club will be led by medical student and ex GB sprinter, Somto Eruchie.

St George’s is a medical school based in Tooting, South London. It is a constituent college of the University of London and a founder member of the now defunct ‘United Hospitals Athletics Club’

St George’s won the second edition of the United Hospitals Athletics Shield in 1868 and won it most recently in 2005. The club then dissolved in 2015.

Since then, students at St. George’s have had limited access to athletics and running opportunities.

A revived club

Now, students at St George’s have revived the club and won student union backing this week. The club is planning to work with tooting-based Herne Hill Harriers to provide opportunities to train on the track. St George’s also plan to provide social runs and compete at ParkRun and Hyde Park relays. They will compete as a team in LUCA events, including the cross-country league and both indoor and outdoor championships and work with the University of London Athletics Club to provide entry to BUCS.

The club committee is made up of:

President: Somto Eruchie
Treasurer: Craig Brooks
Secretary: Nadir Shad
Running Captain: Jack Dickenson
Track and Field Captain: SJ Davis
Social Secretary: Molly O’Donnell
