Become a LUCA Trustee

LUCA (London Universities and Colleges Athletics) is the federation for university athletics in London and the South East. We bring together 20+ member clubs, run leagues and championships, and create opportunities for students of all abilities to take part in athletics.

As we grow and move towards becoming a registered charity, we are looking for passionate and committed individuals to join our Board of Trustees.

Why become a LUCA trustee?

  • Shape the future of student athletics: help us build an inclusive, fun and sustainable athletics community.
  • Support student development: our competitions and programmes provide leadership, volunteering and performance opportunities for thousands of students.
  • Strengthen LUCA as a charity: guide our governance, strategy and finances as we establish LUCA’s charitable foundation.
  • Gain experience working as part of a board, broadening your professional network.
  • Build leadership, governance, and strategic skills that transfer directly to your career.

The role of a trustee

Trustees provide oversight and strategic direction. They are responsible for ensuring LUCA:

  • Acts in line with its charitable objectives.
  • Manages its resources responsibly.
  • Operates legally and transparently.

Day-to-day delivery is led by LUCA’s Executive Committee (students and alumni). Trustees act in a governance role, supporting and advising but not managing operations directly.

Who we’re looking for

We welcome applications from anyone who shares LUCA’s values and commitment to student sport. We are particularly interested in people with experience in:

  • Higher education and student engagement.
  • Finance and governance.
  • Fundraising and partnerships.
  • Athletics and sport development.
  • Marketing and communications.
  • Events and operations.
  • Equality, diversity and inclusion.

We also want voices that reflect the diversity of our community. If you’re passionate but unsure if you “tick every box”, we still encourage you to apply. This is LUCA’s first ever trustee recruitment drive, so we welcome applications from those who may be new to trustee roles.

Time commitment

  • Four board meetings per year (online or hybrid).
  • Occasional input between meetings (e.g. reviewing documents, advising on strategy).
  • Trustees serve for an initial term of three years (renewable).
