Kit Recommendations
OVERVIEW
The purpose of this document is to ensure that all LUCA-affiliated university athletics clubs maintain a consistent and professional identity while minimizing costs for student athletes. A well-designed, distinctive race kit strengthens club branding, fosters team spirit, and ensures easy recognition during competitions. This recommendation document outlines the key principles for race kit consistency, design, and branding requirements.
How to use this document
We have provided general recommendations that are suitable for most clubs. However, there may be circumstances where sections are not appropriate or need to be seen in context. For further advice, please reach out to a LUCA representative.
1. Race Kit Consistency
- Clubs should maintain the same race kit design for a minimum period of four years to reduce financial burden on members.
- Any proposed changes to the race kit should be approved by the club committee with as much notice as possible.
- When redesigning the kit, clubs should ensure minimal disruption to existing members by allowing an overlap period where both old and new designs are accepted.
2. Design and Branding
A club’s race kit should be designed to be distinctive and easily recognisable. To achieve this, the following guidelines are recommended:
- Use of Contrasting Colours: Kits should feature contrasting colours to ensure clear visibility..
- Club Name Display: The name of the club should be displayed prominently in clear, bold lettering on the front or back (or both) of the vest.
- University Colours: The race kit should ideally incorporate the university’s official colours to align with the institution’s identity and maintain brand consistency.
- Minimal Use of Sponsors: Sponsorship logos should be kept to a reasonable size and must not overpower the club branding. Note that sponsor logos (and often manufacturer logos) are covered during BUCS events.
- Club or university logo/crest: The club logo (or university crest/logo) should go on the upper left corner.
- Comfort and Performance: The fabric and fit of the kit should prioritise athlete comfort and performance in various weather conditions.
3. Purchasing and Supply
- Clubs should establish a reliable kit supplier to ensure quality and availability for all members.
- Bulk purchasing should be considered to reduce costs for members.
4. Compliance and Review
- Clubs should encourage that all members wear the approved race kit at LUCA competitions and other events.
- The club committee should review the kit design policy every four years to assess the need for updates while maintaining consistency.
5. Good Practice Examples

Fig 1: Imperial College London: Use of institution colours, bold and contrasting colours, club name front and centre. Longstanding use of the same vest.

Fig 2: UCL: Use of institution colours, bold and contrasting colours, club name front and centre, club logo.
Conclusion
A consistent and well-branded race kit is essential for fostering team identity and ensuring a professional appearance at competitions. By following these recommendations, LUCA clubs can maintain financial sustainability for members while promoting a strong and recognisable presence in university athletics. Clubs are encouraged to uphold these standards to enhance their visibility and representation across all competitions.
