Records tumble as Bolt lights up Muller Anniversary Games

July 24, 2016 Emma Butcher

The British Athletics Anniversary Games 2016 took place on the 22nd-23rd July at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London. This was, for many athletes, a final opportunity to prepare for the Rio Olympics (see our feature here on the London athletes heading to Rio), or to show why they should have been on the Olympic team. An outstanding result from the first evening was the World Record in the women’s 100m hurdles (see the BBC footage here). Keni Harrison of America pulled away from the rest of the field to win […]

Staying fit over summer, why and how?

July 23, 2016 Louise Pech

When the temperature rises, friends, festivals, beach, barbecues and family also come around, and it means that running sometimes gets forgotten. Although it is necessary  to take a break at the end of the summer racing season, stopping all forms of training until university starts again is not the wisest option. WHY? You’ve trained the whole year to get new flying PBs at LCAS. Why then decide to stop all the effort and have to start from scratch when the winter season begins? When you stop training, your body begins “detraining” […]

Too hot to run?

July 19, 2016 James Findon

With temperatures hitting above 30 in the Capital, you might be wondering – is it safe to go for a run? Running in the heat is considered an effective training method for all disciplines of athletics. This is because when it is hot, your muscles get less oxygen and therefore are less efficient. But by training more and more in the heat, the muscles adapt and become more efficient. It’s just a shame we don’t have consistently high temperatures in London. That being said, you don’t need hot weather to raise […]

July 18, 2016 Lucy Patchett

The Beer Mile World Classic (BMWC), held by co-founders Katie Williams and Nick Mcfalls, is being held in the UK this year at Allianz Park, Saracens Stadium, 10am – 6pm on the 31st of July. The event gathers Beer Mile runners from Europe, USA, Australia, and Canada to celebrate a passion for athletics and good old-fashioned craft brew (basically the race is an excuse to get smashed and run like the wind). The BMWC is split into four laps, with runners having to consume 1 beer (355ml at 5%ABV) per […]

Importance of the Core and How to Train it

July 13, 2016 Lucy Patchett

The core mainly consists of the torso muscles: the abdominis and obliques. However, contrary to many people’s conception of the core simply being that much desired ‘six-pack’, there is much more to it than meets the eye. This powerhouse of muscle also includes the diaphragm, pelvic floor, back muscles (multifidus), and the gluteus maximus. […]

UCL RAX en España

June 26, 2016 Emma Butcher

By Peter Chambers, Henry Murdoch, Rahil Sachak-Patwa & Sarah Murphy   Fresh from winning LCAS 2016, UCL RAX members celebrated by jetting off for their inaugural warm weather training trip still dripping in champagne, and accompanied by alumni and friends. There is no better place to recuperate after a challenging LUCA year and exam season than the sunny beaches of the Valencian region in Spain. The group stayed in a villa set at the foot of the Albir mountains and overlooking the sun-ripened Mediterranean, which was fully equipped with a […]
