Jess Judd ‘not allowed’ to run in BUCS 5000m ‘A’ race

April 28, 2017 James Findon

BUCS and English Cross-Country Champion, Jess Judd will not run in the ‘A’ race at BUCS Outdoor Championships. Competition rules require a road or track 5000m performance from within the last two years, which Judd does not have. She will run in the ‘B’ race instead. The Loughborough University student and Sky Scholar, who won a bronze medal at the 2011 World Youth Championships and a silver medal at the 2012 World Junior Championships, took to Twitter to express her frustration. Was excited for my first 5k at @BUCSsport this weekend, […]

What I listen to when I listen when running

April 24, 2017 James Findon

Murakami, author of the bestselling book, ‘What I talk about when I talk about Running’,  was once asked what he listened to when running. He replied; “…rock music. At the moment my favorite is the Manic Street Preachers. When I go jogging in the morning, which is the exception, I load Creedence Clearwater Revival into the minidisk player. Their songs have a simple, natural rhythm.” Kudos to him for keeping it retro with a minidisk player. In fact, the minidisk and Walkman have been credited for a boom in exercise during the […]

It’s Nothing Personal

April 23, 2017 Seth Kennard

The news no one wants to get. That email you hope you to never receive. The unthinkable has happened. There’s an email from Strava saying, “Uh oh, someone stole your CR” (course record). No record can stand the test of time. No record should ever be totally beyond the reach of others. Healthy competition is good, it’s inspiring, it’s stimulating and it’s fun. But that doesn’t mean I want my CRs beaten. So when I had a chance to return to a remote corner of Wales, to the scene of the […]

Run Free: Councils face ban on charging ParkRun

April 16, 2017 James Findon

The Government has proposed a ban on councils charging organisations hosting weekend fun runs. A parish council in Bristol last year controversially proposed charging entrants to Parkrun £1 each, citing the cost of upkeep of paths. Parkrun organisers cancelled the event saying that the proposed charge “went completely against our most fundamental principles”. But under new proposals currently under consultation by Communities Secretary, Sajid Javid, it would be illegal for local authorities to charge Parkrun for use of a public park. The consultation will also consider whether the plans should be extended […]
